Tom Dorn


, President of Dorn Policy Group Inc., has a diverse background in government and politics at the federal, state, county, municipal and tribal levels. His firm currently represents numerous multi-national corporations, trade associations and government entities. Major clients include the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3M, American Insurance Association, Macquarie Capital USA, McLane Company, American Medical Response, The CORE Institute, Cigna Healthcare, Arizona Bioindustry Association, HDR Engineering and Peabody Energy. Dorn Policy Group, Inc. provides government relations services in Arizona as well as Washington D.C. through its affiliation with Miller/Weinhold Capitol Strategies and Capital Partnerships. Prior to starting Dorn Policy Group Inc. in November 2000, Tom was a Partner for three years at the Arizona public affairs firm Jamieson Gutierrez. There he was the chief legislative strategist and lobbyist for the firm’s extensive list of clients including America West Airlines, Cox Communications, Fiesta Bowl, Hitachi Data Systems, Reliant Energy, Southwest Student Services, Hopi Tribe and the City of Tucson. From 1994 to 1997, Tom served as the State and Federal Lobbyist for the Arizona Department of Transportation. There he was instrumental in the development of Republican Governor Fife Symington’s federal transportation policy and served as the key resource to the Arizona Congressional delegation for the federal reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. Tom was also Arizona’s representative to the STEP 21 Coalition, a multi-state, Washington D.C.-based effort to secure equitable highway financing throughout the United States. In 1995, Tom successfully worked with Congressional staff to insert the actual language in the National Highway System Act establishing the CANAMEX Corridor as a high priority corridor. The Corridor has since become the cornerstone of multi-state transportation and economic development cooperation from Arizona to Montana. He also organized the 1996 meeting of the entire Arizona and Nevada Congressional delegations to seek funding for the multi-million dollar Hoover Dam Bridge project that now expedites commerce and tourism between the major metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Las Vegas. These events led to the current development of Congressionally-designated Interstate 11. From 1991 to 1994, Tom worked as the Legislative Director for the Arizona State Land Department, where he secured passage of legislation to allow two referendums regarding state land exchanges to be placed on the state general election ballot. He lobbied the legislature on various matters including natural resource management, grazing leases, forestry, urban planning and environmental protection. Previously, Tom was also Legislative Director for the Arizona Department of Commerce under Democratic Governor Rose Mofford. Active in several economic development trade organizations, he lobbied the state legislature on issues such as business recruitment, international trade, energy utilization, sports promotion, housing and business finance. Early in his career, Tom served as a Congressional intern Washington for the late Arizona Congressman Jay Rhodes and then as a Government Relations Assistant to prominent Arizona lobbyist P. Robert Fannin, former chairman of the Arizona Republican Party and U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republican. Tom holds both a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University (ASU). In 2001, he was named by The Phoenix Business Journal as one of the top “40 Under 40” business leaders in Phoenix. He is active in the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Town Hall, Arizona Tax Research Association, and serves on the boards of the Arizona Highway Users and Paradise Valley Christian Preparatory.
