Michael J. Sumko, D.O., is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the management of arthritis, hip and knee replacement, joint reconstruction and revision surgery, and robotic assisted MAKOplasty® for uni-compartmental disease. Dr. Sumko is dedicated to providing his patients with high quality care. This is accomplished by his focus on minimally invasive soft-tissue, muscle sparring techniques that allow less pain and a fast track to recovery after surgery. He strives to have his patients experience a minimal hospital stay to help return them to their active lifestyles and improve their quality of life. He believes each patient is unique. He has been trained on a variety of the latest technologies to accomplish successful outcomes on an individualized basis. Dr. Sumko received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in Provo Utah, and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. He completed his general orthopaedic surgery internship and residency with Pinnacle Health Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Penn State Hershey Medical Center. After having extensive training in joint reconstruction during residency, Dr. Sumko developed a love for joint reconstruction and pursued an orthopaedic fellowship under orthopaedic industry leader Dr. Anthony Hedley at Hedley Orthopaedic Institute in Phoenix, Arizona to further his expertise. Dr. Sumko enjoys serving in the community. He served a two year Spanish speaking mission in Puerto Rico, currently serves in his local church, and loves working with and serving the United States veterans. Dr. Sumko maintains memberships in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, American Osteopathic Association, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medicine Association, and the Maricopa County Medical Society. Dr. Sumko operates at Tempe St. Luke's Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Center. He is currently seeing patients at Hedley Orthopaedic Institute at the Tempe and Phoenix locations.
