Judge Hannah received his B.A. degree from Pomona College in 1980. He was admitted to the Arizona Bar after graduating from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1984. He served as a law clerk to the Hon. William C. Canby in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1984-1985. He practiced civil litigation at Meyer Hendricks Victor Osborn and Maledon from 1985 until 1989. He then worked as a staff attorney at the Arizona Capital Representation Project, representing death-sentenced inmates in post-conviction proceedings, from 1989 until 1991. From 1991 until 1998 he was an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Phoenix. He then had a private practice at his own firm, Holdal & Hannah, PLC, specializing in criminal defense, until Governor Napolitano appointed him to the Maricopa County Superior Court in 2005. He has served in all four of the major Superior Court departments: civil, criminal, family and juvenile. He recently returned to Family Court after five years on a Civil Assignment. Professional activities include service as an adjunct law faculty member at both ASU and U of A law schools; past chair of the Arizona State Bar Committee on the Rules of Professional Conduct; lawyer representative of the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference; and member of the Ninth Circuit Jury Improvement Committee, an ad hoc committee appointed by the Chief Judge of the Circuit to update jury policies and procedures.
