Jessica Jean-Marie Kokal

Broening Oberg Woods & Wilson PC

Jessica Kokal is a partner with Broening Oberg Woods & Wilson. Jessica moved to the Valley from the Detroit metropolitan area to attend Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University as a National Merit scholar recruit. There, she received dual B.A.s in English Literature and Political Science while completing her Honors thesis on the media’s impact on women’s body image. She remained at Arizona State University to attend law school at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law while also working full-time at a small Phoenix firm. After joining Broening, Oberg, Woods & Wilson as an associate in 2016 to continue her insurance defense practice, Jessica was invited to become a partner in 2018.

Jessica’s practice includes the areas of commercial general liability, medical and professional liability and lawyer discipline, dram shop, products liability, premises liability, automobile liability defense, insurance bad faith with a particular focus on workers’ compensation bad faith, and wrongful death and personal injury defense. Since beginning her practice, Jessica has defended over 30 arbitrations and tried multiple cases, both civil and disciplinary, including helping bring three jury trials to defense verdicts. Jessica also second-chaired a 2019 multi-million-dollar medical malpractice/wrongful death case that was recognized as a Significant Defense Verdict in Arizona Attorney Magazine, a publication of the State Bar of Arizona.

In addition to maintaining her practice, Jessica oversees the firm’s mentorship program and chairs the firm’s diversity and recruitment committees. Between 2017 and 2019, she also directed the Phoenix Ladder Down program, designed to help women lawyers extend the “ladder down” to other women lawyers.
