GEOFFREY A. BALON is an attorney for the City of Mesa currently on special assignment in the City Attorney’s Office Litigation Department.  His practice includes defending the City against lawsuits such as alleged Fourth Amendment violations.  Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Balon was a prosecutor at the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO) and the City of Mesa Prosecutor’s Office.   While at the MCAO for five years, Mr. Balon handled mostly violent crimes including homicides in the Southwest Valley Bureau of the Community Based Prosecution Division and the Gang Bureau of the Major Offenders Division.  In 2015, Mr. Balon was named the Community Based Prosecution Division Attorney of the Year. While at the Mesa Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Balon handled a variety of crimes including drug offenses, DUIs, and domestic violence.  Mr. Balon is the President of the State Bar Young Lawyers Division and sits on the State Bar Board of Governors.  Mr. Balon is a graduate of the Bar Leadership Institute, Chair of the State Bar Public Lawyers Section and the Phoenix Cardozo Society, and serves on the Phoenix Youth and Education Commission.  Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Mr. Balon was a Judicial Law Clerk to then Vice Chief Justice Scott Bales at the Arizona Supreme Court.  Prior to attending law school, Mr. Balon worked as the Press Assistant to U.S. Senator Tim Johnson.  Mr. Balon graduated from The University of Arizona with a B.A. in Psychology in 2008 and his J.D. in 2011.
