Trust Lands and the Fee to Trust Process

Description

Course discusses the basics of trust land that are true for all tribal lands held in trust. It will also include the definition of Indian Country as well as a brief history of Trust Land, including discussions on the General Allotment Act and lightly touch upon the Federal Trust Responsibility. It will lead into the end of the allotment era and briefly discuss the 1934 Reorganization Act. 
 
The second half of the course will focus on the Fee to Trust process and will discuss the discretionary trust process for both non-gaming and gaming as well as the mandatory trust process. This portion will also discuss the purpose of trust acquisitions and the implications for governments at every level. Additionally, attendees will leave with an understanding of why a tribe/individual should or should not request to have land placed into trust.
