This course explores professionalism principles and analyzes a series of professionalism hypotheticals pertinent to a lawyer's relationship with clients, judges, and other attorneys. The bulk of the seminar is presented in interactive breakout groups. New admittees to the State Bar of Arizona must complete this course within one year of being admitted to the Bar. Space is limited for each session.
In a profession that was designed to be adversarial in nature, it's only natural that conflicts with our colleagues, the judiciary and our clients may arise. How we resolve these conflicts reflects upon the profession as a whole. This course is designed to help restore civility and elevate the standards by which we treat all those with whom we come in contact.
The mandatory course, for all newly admitted Arizona members, satisfies the requirement under Rule 34(n), Ariz. R. Sup. Ct.

Matt McGregor is Bar Counsel with the State Bar of Arizona’s Intake department. Born and raised in the far suburbs of Chicago, IL., his first legal job was with the Maricopa County Attorney’s office, where he worked from 2002 – 2007. Matt worked in the Preliminary Hearing, Juvenile, and Family Violence Bureaus. Matt then moved over to the State Bar of Arizona’s Lawyer Regulation department in 2007, where he worked as a Litigation Bar Counsel, and then transitioned into a part of the Intake department. In 2011, Matt returned to the County Attorney’s office, where he worked in Charging / Grand Jury, Family Violence, Gangs, and as a Mentor for newer attorneys in the Preliminary Hearing bureau. Matt then returned to the State Bar’s Intake department in February 2016, and he also assists in conducting in-person law office assessments for the State Bar’s Law Office Management Assistance Program. Matt regularly teaches as part of the State Bar of Arizona’s Professionalism Course and other CLEs.
is the Membership Administration and Services Manager and Mentor Program Director at the State Bar of Arizona. Prior to working at the State Bar, she was a Prosecutor for 18 years in multiple jurisdictions including City of Scottsdale, Maricopa County and Ak-Chin Indian Community. As a Prosecutor she tried over 100 bench trials and 25 jury trials. In 2010, she decided to expand her legal career and began teaching in the Criminal Justice and Security Program at the University of Phoenix where she continues to be an adjunct faculty member. She also taught Criminal Justice courses at Grand Canyon University. Kendra is a graduate of Arizona State University and Southwestern Law School.
Meredith L. Vivona is the Ethics Counsel for the State Bar of Arizona, where she advises lawyers through the Ethics Hotline, presents ethics related CLE programs, acts as legal advisor to the Fee Arbitration Program, serves on the Ethics Advisory Group and acts as liaison to the Arizona Supreme Court’s Attorney Ethics Advisory Committee. Prior to becoming Ethics Counsel, Meredith served as Practice Management Attorney for Practice 2.0 and the Trust Account Helpline, the State Bar’s confidential practice management and trust account advice program. Before joining the State Bar of Arizona, Meredith served as Independent Bar Counsel, investigating and prosecuting misconduct allegations brought against attorneys, when the Lawyer Regulation Office had a conflict. Part of Meredith’s responsibilities included serving as Acting Disciplinary Counsel for the Commission on Judicial Conduct where she investigated and resolved judicial misconduct complaints. Before serving as IBC, Meredith enjoyed a varied career in private practice, with experience in civil litigation matters throughout the state. Meredith is admitted to practice in Arizona and the U.S. District Court for the State of Arizona. Meredith received her Juris Doctor from Wake Forest Law School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
David Horowitz has significant experience in all child-related issues, including step-parent adoption, grandparents' rights, parenting coordination, same-sex parenting, and guardianship/conservatorship. His practice also offers guidance with prenuptial and post-nuptial agreements, complex divorce (including business valuation and complex custody and child support issues), collaborative divorce, mediation, arbitration, and court-appointed special master services. He is also a respected mediator in family law disputes and serves as a judge pro tem for the Maricopa County Superior Court. David is a Certified Family Law Specialist (Arizona Board of Legal Specialization) and a Super Lawyers honoree. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, serves on the Academy's board of governors, and chairs its Mediation Committee. He is the current chair of the State Bar of Arizona's Board of Legal Specialization Family Law Advisory Commission and an officer of the State Bar's Family Law Executive Council. David teaches Family Law and Legal Studies at Phoenix College and has been an adjunct faculty member at the Phoenix School of Law and Arizona Summit Law School. He has been practicing in Arizona for over 30 years. He received his B.S.B.A. in Business Economics (1987) from the University of Arizona Eller College of Management and his J.D. (1990) from the University of Arizona College of Law.
