On January 1, 2022, Arizona became the first American jurisdiction to eliminate peremptory challenges. One year after it took effect, litigators are still grappling with the new rule’s impact on voir dire and jury selection. In this seminar, a panel of seasoned trial attorneys and trial judges will discuss the history of the rule change and how it has caused their perspectives on voir dire and trial craft techniques to evolve. Additionally, Arizona Supreme Court Staff Attorney John Rogers will briefly address any new rules taking effect at the beginning of the year and any rule change petition of note.

Panelists:
Honorable Danielle Viola, Presiding Civil Judge, Maricopa County Superior Court
James D. Smith (Ret.), Osborn Maledon PA and former Maricopa County Superior Court Judge
Bill Klain, Lang & Klain PC
John Rogers, Staff Attorney, Supreme Court of Arizona
Callie Maxwell, Kent & Wittekind, P.C.
