Description

Intimate partner violence is increasingly understood as an ongoing crime of control—more like a long-term hostage situation than a series of physical assaults. With original drawings and compelling stories, this presentation explains the tactics of coercive control including isolation, intimidation, monitoring, gaslighting, stalking and physical violence. This presentation will help you recognize coercive control--even when there are no bruises. (For legal professionals, investigators, case managers, service providers, and others whose clients and cases feature unhealthy relationship dynamics.)

 Learning Objectives:

  1.  Learn the tactics of coercive control in intimate relationships.
  2.  Understand how coercive control shapes a victim's behavior.
  3.  Improve your ability to detect and intervene in situations of coercive control and intimate partner violence.

Speaker(s): Lisa Fontes, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, has qualified as an expert in domestic violence/child abuse in sixteen+ states. She is the author of multiple articles and books, including Invisible Chains: Overcoming Coercive Control in Your Intimate Relationship, Interviewing Clients Across Cultures, and Child Abuse & Culture: Working with Diverse Families.
