Description

CLE provides a comprehensive overview of the intersection of criminal and immigration law.  The program will cover:

  • Overview of the most important issues affecting non-citizen criminal defendants in Arizona.
  • Explanation of essential immigration concepts such as removability, inadmissibility, major categories of crimes (and common Arizona offenses) that trigger adverse immigration consequences.
  • Discussion of the practical, and ethical, responsibilities of properly communicating with your non-citizen client, and setting realistic expectations.
  • The art and the science of working with criminal defense and immigration attorneys, prosecutors, and judges in the pursuit of securing plea agreements that are “immigration safe.”
  • A review of the essential concepts of post-conviction relief for non-citizens, focusing on how Arizona attorneys can help reduce instances of ineffective assistance of counsel when representing noncitizen clients.

Maurice Goldman works in Tucson, Arizona at Goldman & Goldman, P.C. He holds a J.D./M.B.A. from Hofstra University. He graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. in journalism. His law practice is focused only on immigration-related matters including employment-based, family-based, asylum, removal defense and other humanitarian-based immigration issues. Mr. Goldman has served on multiple national American Immigration Lawyers Association's (AILA) committees. He's a recipient of the 2010 AILA Joseph Minsky Young Lawyer Award and the 2018 Randy Tunac Courage in Immigration Award. Mo previously served as the AILA Arizona chapter chair. He was previously a trustee to the American Immigration Council (AIC) and sat on the boards of the ASISTA, Border Action Network and Immigrants List.

Matthew Green is the owner of Green Evans-Schroeder in Tucson, Arizona. Grounded in criminal defense and trial work, Mr. Green has focused his practice on immigration litigation since 2006. He and his associates represent clients in the Arizona immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and Arizona federal and state courts. The firm also handles a diverse family-based immigration caseload, and is particularly invested in detention and removal work that involves the intersection of immigration and criminal law.
