Description

Join the Arizona State Bar as we promote dialogue and increase our shared understanding around the issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession and our justice system. This CLE will give Arizona State Bar legal professionals and community partners the opportunity to participate in a CLE program and facilitated discussion on a number of advanced DE&I topics including those surrounding race and equity. The CLE includes an introduction to the Rooney and Mansfield Rules as methods to increase diverse hiring and will explore the impact of such rules on retention and organizational culture. Inspired by the NFL’s “Rooney Rule,” the Mansfield Rule measures whether law firms have considered historically underrepresented lawyers for significant governance roles, lateral openings, and promotions. The Mansfield Rule is named for Arabella Mansfield, the first woman lawyer admitted to the practice of law in the United States. The Rule is one of the winning ideas of the 2016 Women in Law Hackathon, hosted by Stanford Law School.
There will be discussion regarding the adoption of the Mansfield Rule by corporate legal departments and how it balances with demands of outside counsel. The discussion will also include how a process from NFL influenced diversity and inclusion hiring processes in the legal field. Overall, this program will explore the benefits and challenges of these practices. We believe lawyers are uniquely qualified and well-positioned to contribute to the national conversation on the advancement of DE&I initiatives across the country and in doing so, to model civility and mutual respect.
