Family Law Firsts Series: Essentials of Procedure and Discovery This introductory series is designed as a resource for new family law practitioners.  The Honorable Suzanne Nicholls, Maricopa County Superior Court and Nicholas J. Brown, The Cavanagh Law Firm PA , will provide practical guidance on The Rules of Family Law Procedure related to Disclosure and Discovery. Topics for this session will include:  Mandatory disclosures under Rules 49 and 91 (what are you required to disclose, how, and when) and drafting disclosure statements; and  A brief overview of basic discovery methods (Subpoenas Duces Tecum, Depositions, Interrogatories, Requests for Admissions, and Requests for Production) and a detailed discussion of how to utilize certain discovery methods to your advantage (and how to know when not to use certain methods).   Faculty: Honorable Suzanne M. Honorable Suzanne Nicholls was appointed to the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County in April 2020. She has served on the Family Court Bench since that time. Before her appointment to the bench, Hon. Nicholls served as a Deputy Public Advocate representing parents and families in dependency actions for many years. She was awarded the Arizona Public Defender Association's Outstanding Performance Award in July 2017 for her work in developing and drafting the law regarding Court Authorized Removals in dependency actions. Prior to that, Hon. Nicholls worked at the Arizona Attorney General's Office in the Child and Family Protection Division representing the Department of Child Safety, after having served many years in the Criminal Appeals Division. Her diversity of legal practice also included several years at two different private civil litigation firms spanning many areas including insurance defense, civil litigation, estate planning, and intergovernmental law. Hon. Nicholls has participated in various young attorney developmental programs through Arizona State University's Moot Court and Mock Trial programs and is a member of the Thurgood Marshall Inn of Court, Arizona Women's Lawyers Association and other associations.

NICHOLAS J. BROWN concentrates his practice in the areas of family law and domestic relations, including interstate jurisdictional disputes, property characterization issues, and custody matters, in addition to appeals and special actions. Nick is a member with The Cavanagh Law Firm, P.A. Before joining the firm, he completed a clerkship at the Arizona Supreme Court with Chief Justice Scott Bales. Nick currently serves as a member of the Family Law Executive Council of the State Bar of Arizona. Nick is devoted to staying abreast of emergent issues in family law and the state of the law in Arizona in general. He constantly seeks opportunities to publish articles on new cases, rules, and issues. Nick has presented on Arizona family law procedures and rules regarding discovery, disclosure, temporary orders, and the UCCJEA. Apart from English, Nick also speaks Spanish.
