NICHOLAS J. BROWN concentrates his practice in the areas of family law and domestic relations, including interstate jurisdictional disputes, property characterization issues, and custody matters, in addition to appeals and special actions. Nick is a member with The Cavanagh Law Firm, P.A. Before joining the firm, he completed a clerkship at the Arizona Supreme Court with Chief Justice Scott Bales. Nick currently serves as a member of the Family Law Executive Council of the State Bar of Arizona. Nick is devoted to staying abreast of emergent issues in family law and the state of the law in Arizona in general. He constantly seeks opportunities to publish articles on new cases, rules, and issues. Nick has presented on Arizona family law procedures and rules regarding discovery, disclosure, temporary orders, and the UCCJEA. Apart from English, Nick also speaks Spanish.
Judge Patricia Starr was appointed as a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge in March of 2014; she served as a Commissioner on that Court from 2011 through 2014. Judge Starr is currently assigned to the Family Department. She served as Criminal Presiding Judge from 2019 to 2022, and was previously assigned to the Lower Court Appeals, Civil, Criminal and Probate/Mental Health Departments.
Prior to taking the bench, Judge Starr worked for three years as a Capital Staff Attorney through the Arizona Death Penalty Judicial Assistance Project, assisting trial judges statewide with death penalty cases. Judge Starr served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Arizona Attorney General and Deputy County Attorney for Maricopa County, handling both trial and appellate matters, including criminal, civil, sexually violent person, mental health and capital cases. Judge Starr also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jefferson L. Lankford of the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One.
Judge Starr is the Chair of the Arizona Supreme Court’s Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET) and serves on the Arizona Supreme Court’s Committee on the Superior Court. She previously served on the Arizona Commission on Judicial Performance Review, State Bar Conflict Case Committee, State Bar Committee on Legal Services, and Editorial Board of the Arizona Attorney.
