Four years after implementation of this program learn how Arizona alternative business structure (ABS) law firms are operating.  Learn what is required when applying for a license as well as what to know once you are licensed. The panel will cover:

  • How the ABS application process is working
  • Fee sharing in an ABS
  • Succession Planning
  • Innovation in the system
  • What is required for the semi-annual compliance audits
  • Arizona ethical rule requirements for supervision of non-lawyers
  • Geographic restrictions on an Arizona ABS.

Lynda C. Shely, is an Arizona partner in Rosing, Pott & Strohbehn (RPS), in partnership with Zelms Erlich Lenkov, where she provides legal ethics and Alternative Business Structure (ABS) law firm regulatory advice to lawyers and law firms. Lynda was the 2020 – 2023 chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, an Arizona Delegate in the ABA House of Delegates, and currently volunteers with several other nonbillable groups involved in legal ethics matters, including as a member of the Arizona Supreme Court’s Alternative Business Structures Committee, the Arizona Supreme Court’s Steering Committee on AI and the Courts, the ABA Standing Committee on Professional Regulation, and the State Bar of Arizona Ethics Advisory Group. She is a past president of the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, the National ABS Law Firm Association, and the Scottsdale Bar Association and has been an adjunct professor at all Arizona law schools, teaching professional responsibility. Before joining RPS she had her own solo practice for 21 years. Prior to opening her own firm, she was the Director of Lawyer Ethics for the State Bar of Arizona. Lynda started out as an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Washington, DC. Lynda received her BA from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA and her JD from Catholic University in Washington, DC. She has received several awards for her contributions to the legal profession including most recently the 2022 Maricopa County Bar Association Member of the Year Award, the 2023 Maricopa County Bar Hall of Fame, and the 2024 Arizona Women Lawyers’ Association Sarah Herring Sorin Award.

SUZANNE PORTER is General Counsel for LegalSifter, a legal technology company that combines artificial and human intelligence in products built as software, service, or both. Prior to joining LegalSifter, Suzanne was the Legal Service Innovations Officer at the Arizona Supreme Court where she implemented and managed all aspects of the Alternative Business Structure and Legal Paraprofessional programs in addition to a range of pilot programs recommended by the Task Force on the Delivery of Legal Services. Suzanne began her career as a patent litigation attorney in New York and Toronto and later taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. She also held the role of Director of Content at LexisNexis where she led a team of experts to develop legal technology products designed to improve workflow and productivity in the legal profession.
