Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is the largest evidence-based communication technique professionals can employ to ensure effective communication between themselves and their clients and coworkers. With growing pressures, it is essential to learn strategies to help our clients and team to be even more successful. Intentional, focused, and iterative training is most effective for improving our team functioning and communication. Through this introductory Motivational Interviewing training, participants will learn the fundamental processes and core MI skills. Further, application of skills will be reviewed through examples and case scenarios. In addition, use of stages of change and focused staged interventions to improve outcomes and collaboration will be reviewed.  

Learning Objectives  

  • Identify key elements of communication intervention for promoting behavior change   
  • Identify stages of change and behavioral readiness indicators   
  • Demonstrate linking a specific motivational interviewing skill to an identified stage of change to enhance change movement  
  • Practice motivational interviewing skills using conviction and confidence assessment  
  • Practice motivational interviewing skills applied to client and mediation scenarios
