Sex Trafficking Behind Bars
Original Program Date :

This presentation explores the distinctive characteristics of sex trafficking for persons who are incarcerated. Incarcerated women are at a unique risk for sex trafficking due to publicly released information about them (photos, charges). Jails and prisons in Arizona allow for anyone to put money on someone’s jail/prison account and create a debt owed. Also, sex traffickers can communicate to the outside to recruit and run sex trafficking rings as well as use their jail/prison account to launder money. Faculty discusses how jail and prison staff can detect these behaviors and protect potential or known victims.

What You’ll Learn:

1. Terms and unique challenges in human trafficking cases

2. Statutes, ordinances, and case law regarding human trafficking cases

3. Immigration impact for witnesses, victims and suspects in human trafficking cases

Faculty:
Lourdes Bandilla, Detention Officer Lieutenant, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

Presented by: Public Lawyers Section and Criminal Justice Section at the 2023 Annual State Bar Convention
